DESCRIPTION:Bees and Pollinators in the Wild and “Wilding” \nLong-term pollinator resilience is critical for farmers\, gardeners\, and communities. This session explores two complementary approaches to this goal. First\, LocApiary—a project of Apis Arborea—promotes the “wilding” of honeybees by restoring natural nesting ecologies at the watershed scale. SUMMARY:Autumn Field Trip to the Wild Honeybee Population of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:There is something truly awe-inspiring about witnessing honeybees flying in and out of their secretive wild abode nestled within a tree. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, almost 80 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2024\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. During this excursion\, we will spend the day exploring wild bee trees\, delving into the intricacies of our project and its discoveries\, and engaging in hands-on activities such as beelining. \nWe are looking forward to welcoming you for this trip into the Wild (please know that only a limited amount of tickets is available). \n“In observing bees in their most unadulterated state\, we often find our perceptions of them undergo a profound transformation. DESCRIPTION:Biomimicry is an integral approach that allows us to harness nature’s time-tested strategies to support thriving populations of local honeybees. By observing and emulating the natural processes and adaptations of wild honeybees\, we can develop more effective and sustainable conservation practices. This nature-inspired approach helps us create environments and management techniques that align with the bees’ innate behaviors and needs\, fostering resilience and ecological balance. \nIn this course segment we will go step by step through the process of building natural TreeNests (aka log hives) and share lots of video footage\, go over necessary tools\, and other resources. We will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift in apicultural strategies in the Anthropocene. \nWe also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture\, such as the 1000 year old “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The wilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. DESCRIPTION:The LocApiary Program is a watershed-centric ecological restoration initiative fostering self-sustaining networks of wild\, unmanaged honeybee populations within local ecosystems. This method is an unconventional art of tracking bee trees and serves as an alternative to beelining\, which we typically practice during the rest of the year. The preserve is home to a thriving population of wild honeybees\, with nearly 60 bee trees identified and monitored by Apis Arborea since 2021.

SUMMARY:Field Trip to the Wild Honeybee Populations of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:There is something truly awe-inspiring about witnessing honeybees flying in and out of their secretive wild abode nestled within a tree. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, nearly 50 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. During this excursion\, we will spend the day exploring wild bee trees\, delving into the intricacies of our project and its discoveries\, and engaging in hands-on activities such as beelining. \nWe are looking forward to welcoming you for this trip into the Wild (please know that only a limited amount of tickets is available). \n“In observing bees in their most unadulterated state\, we often find our perceptions of them undergo a profound transformation. SUMMARY:Building TreeNests for Honeybees
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person workshop in Sonoma County\, CA\, and learn how to build a natural nesting site (TreeNest) for Honeybees. We will use traditional and contemporary tools for the construction process and learn about principles for the design and set-up of TreeNests. The workshop will combine hands-on practical work on logs with an introduction to an arboreal apiculture paradigm.  \nThe departure from normalcy due to climate emergencies and accelerating extinction rates of all species opens the door to a re-evaluation and re-conceptualization of core belief systems and practices in beekeeping. As wild Apis Mellifera survives in non-managed ecosystems and nest sites\, they represent a resource for new strategies for contemporary apiculture and a fundamental shift in bee stewardship. Arboreal apiculture explores new ways of animal stewardship and conservation in a time that calls for out-of-the-box thinking. \nTickets are sliding scale.
