SUMMARY:Bees without Borders
DESCRIPTION:Bees without Borders is a collaborative project of FreeTheBees (Suisse)\, Honey Bee Wild (Luxembourg) & Apis Arborea (USA). The language of the events can be German\, English\, or French (depending on the topic and presenters). \nOur guest will be Bigna Zellweger from Switzerland. She lives in the small mountain village of Tenna in the pristine Safiental. She is a qualified beekeeper and zoologist as well as a companion for the dying. People and animals – especially bees – enrich her life very much. She is currently setting up a Zeidler project in Tenna. Honeybees have developed various defense strategies against pathogens during their millions of years of evolution. Many of them work thanks to the honey bees’ social way of life. What do these strategies look like\, what does the natural habitat\, the tree cavity in the forest\, contribute to the bees’ health and why does our current way of life counteract many of these developments?  This presentation will be held in German language\, recorded\, and made available on our YouTube channel.  \nAccess to the conference is free of charge. SUMMARY:Presentation at the Sonoma County Beekeepers Association
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be about our 7-year research study of wild\, unmanaged honeybees in a Wildlands Preserve in Mendocino County that is owned by Sonoma State University. We started the project in 2021 and will conclude around 2028. We envision a multidisciplinary project that allows for multiple stakeholders to collaborate. Currently\, we are working with Texas A&M and also UC Riverside. We use beelining as a tool to track bees and locate BeeTrees. Topics will include some of the new revelations of beelining\, including tips and challenges. After an initial assessment phase (locating Beetrees)\, monitoring\, sampling\, and other activities will take the lead. So far\, we could document 100% winter survival (with a small initial data set).\nHow can we integrate the qualities and conditions that allow honeybees in the wild to thrive into our backyards and beekeeping? One approach we have taken is that we are exploring ways to incorporate the biomimicry of natural nest conditions and developed TreeNests as a novel tool for conservation. Honeybees as novel wildlife in the Americas is a rich and pioneering field of research. Environmental challenges such as climate emergency and the 6th mass extinctions are new emerging compass points for apian conservation (and that of all species) that invite us with utmost urgency into the development of truly sustainable systems.

DESCRIPTION:During this live stream event\, Michael will go step by step through the process of building natural TreeNests (aka log hives) and share lots of video footage\, necessary tools\, and other resources. This lifestream event will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift for apiculture strategies in the Anthropocene. \nWe also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture\, such as the “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The rewilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. Arboreal apiculture explores new ways of animal stewardship and conservation in a time that calls for out-of-the-box thinking. \nTickets are sliding scale. This gathering will have time to engage mind (learning)\, body (building)\, spirit (intention/prayer)\, as well as fun community connection time.  In this 2-day experiential weekend workshop\, we will: Learn to design\, build\, and install a beautiful wildlife arboreal nest for honeybees; celebrate with a circle of like-minded people in this forest we call home; have fun doing something positive for the earth in these crazy changing times; learn about free-living honeybees as members of pollinator communities and new ways we can support them thriving; leave with instructions\, materials lists\, and know-how to build your own arboreal nest for wild honeybees; enjoy the spiritual connection with sacred honeybees\, pollinators\, and each other; \nConservation – This is a permaculture-based offering to enhance the biodiversity of our lands\, mitigate the loss of natural nesting habitat for unmanaged\, free-living honeybees\, and contribute with love to our local forests. Climate change\, fires\, tree clearing due to beetle infestation\, and tree-fall caused by drought have all reduced wild habitat for our pollinators. Working with pine logs from our own forests\, we can replace lost log homes for free-living bees\, bats\, and other precious pollinators.

SUMMARY:Wilding Honeybees: A field trip to Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:New research and impacts on global ecosystems caused by climate change continue to contribute to a change of thinking\, where nativeness is not anymore considered to be the only directive principle in conservation biology. In addition\, new concepts such as the holobiont (Scott Gilbert)\, deep ecology\, and current conservation biology (Peter Kareiva\, Arthur Shapiro\, Mark Davis) are contemporary inquiries that challenge default dichotomies.\nNaturalized\, wild honey bees in remote landscapes are part of novel ecosystems. We have begun a 7-year research project at GWP that investigates their life cycles and status as a co- constituent of a diverse pollinator community. During this field trip\, we will visit several bee trees that are dispersed throughout the preserve\, and that we located through beelining. We will share priority area foci of our research study and discuss questions of conservation in the time of the Anthropocene. For registration click here.

SUMMARY:‘Wilding’: Creating Regenerative Apian Networks
DESCRIPTION:The departure from normalcy due to climate emergency and accelerating extinction rates of all species opens the door to a re-evaluation and re-conceptualization of core belief systems and practices in beekeeping and conservation. \nThis workshop will explore new vantages of the pioneering arboreal apicultural field and will outline a framework of innovative practices and strategies. It promotes the re-alignment of apiculture with the fundamentals of wild apian ecologies and ethics.  With a focus on self-willed ecological processes\, wilding becomes a driver of change for the science of ecology and conservation.   \nWe will introduce the innovative concept of LocApiary (local watershed apiaries) and show how it can serve as a powerful resource towards a life-sustaining shift within apiculture. The workshop will provide resources for a deeper understanding of honeybees as a naturalized species and as a co-constituent of the wider pollinator community\, and tools for designing apian networks with ecological and ethical integrity. It is a compass point for strategies beyond sustainability. \nThe ecological integrity of wild populations of honeybees (Apis Mellifera) is transforming the fundamentals of apiculture and initiating a radical shift in thinking for beekeepers\, conservationists\, and scientists alike. SUMMARY:Bees without Borders: Wild pollinators and honey bees in pollinator-friendly agricultural landscapes
DESCRIPTION:The Bees without Borders conference series aims to help promote knowledge\, awareness and understanding around honey bees and other pollinators\, with each online conference simultaneously translated into German\, French and English.  A platform for bee researchers\, experienced practitioners and enthusiasts. The conference series hopes to illuminate the complexities of honey bee ecologies and also its relationships with and its role in the wider pollinator communities. After a very successful start on 21 November 2020 with Bees without Borders as a full-day event\, a new conference format is planned\, starting in March 2022\, with monthly conferences. Each month a different topic is planned with one or two speakers who will enrich you during two hours with their expertise and experience\, and answer your questions. These conferences are organized by FREETHEBEES in Switzerland\, in collaboration with Honey Bee Wild (Luxembourg)\, Apis Arborea (USA)\, and the Natural Beekeeping Trust (UK).

DESCRIPTION:An online tutorial that teaches how to build log hives\, and that combines cutting-edge research with traditional apicultural practices. \nAbout this event\nDuring this live stream event\, Michael will go step by step through the process of making vertical and horizontal log hives and share lots of video footage\, necessary tools\, and other resources. This lifestream event will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift for apiculture strategies in the Anthropocene.\nWe also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture\, such as the “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The rewilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive.
