SUMMARY:Field Trip to the Wild Honeybee Populations of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:There is something truly awe-inspiring about witnessing honeybees flying in and out of their secretive wild abode nestled within a tree. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, nearly 40 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. During this excursion\, we will spend the day exploring wild bee trees\, delving into the intricacies of our project and its discoveries\, and engaging in hands-on activities such as beelining. \nWe are looking forward to welcoming you for this trip into the Wild (please know that only a limited amount of tickets is available). \n“In observing bees in their most unadulterated state\, we often find our perceptions of them undergo a profound transformation. DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker in October will be Maggie Shanahan. We met with her for an interview in early October and will publish the podcast asap.  Maggie (she/her) is a beekeeper\, researcher\, and parent currently based in Chiapas\, Mexico\, where she works with her extended family to manage a variety of bee-related farming projects. She holds a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Minnesota\, where she studied the strategies that honey bees and stingless bees use to keep their colonies healthy and the agricultural systems that impact bee health. SUMMARY:Wilding Honeybees / Field Trip to the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:New research on the impact of climate change on global ecosystems continues to send our thinking in new directions. One of those sacred principles being challenged is the notion that nativeness is the gold standard in conservation biology. That isn’t necessarily so. Naturalized wild honeybees in remote landscapes are part of novel ecosystems. A Sonoma County nonprofit\, Apis Arborea\, has begun a seven-year research project on the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve to investigate the life cycles of wild honeybees and their role in a diverse pollinator community. Come visit several bee trees on the preserve with us\, and learn about a successful bee-tree-locating technique called beelining.\nLeaders:\nMichael Thiele is the founder and president of Apis Arborea. His pioneering approach to apiculture and honeybee conservation has appeared in national and international magazines\, books\, and films. Cheyanna Bone is the program director of Apis Arborea and is part of the Galberath research team.\nDetails:\nMichael and his team have been using the beelining technique to locate nests of wild honeybees on the Galbreath Preserve for the past year. The Eastern Cascades Community Honeybee Conservation Project – (ECCHCP) is a collaborative community-led conservation initiative. Apis Arborea serves as an intermediary facilitator for entomological research and compassionate conservation and collaborates with a diverse group of local stakeholders\, including small family farmers\, a tribal nation (Sweet Water Springs)\, Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife\, community organizers\, and apiculturists. Apis Arborea’s goal is to assist the Eastern Cascades community to increase their ecological capacity and reach\, and to co-create a diverse palette of educational programs that include hands-on fieldwork. This project is an extension of our Apian Networks Program and is centered on meta-populations that focus on the honeybee populations in local watersheds. It promotes a symbiotic narrative and a vision for the collaboration of landscape\, honeybees & humans. It supports the conditions necessary for populations of honeybees to thrive and it will generate baseline data for habitat and nesting sites. The framework of Apian Networks follows the natural life gestures of honeybees and integrates cutting-edge research in life sciences\, biomimicry\, and traditional practices. The Apian Networks Program integrates ‘wilding’ principles to promote self-willed ecological processes of ‘living landscapes’ (long-term\, minimum intervention\, natural process-led area). This community-led project will pioneer new ways of conservation\, and has the opportunity to create programs for the protection and assessments of honeybees in non-cultivated landscapes.

DESCRIPTION:Bees without Borders is a collaborative project of FreeTheBees (Suisse)\, Honey Bee Wild (Luxembourg) & Apis Arborea (USA). The language of the events can be German\, English\, or French (depending on the topic and presenters). \nOur guest will be Bigna Zellweger from Switzerland. She lives in the small mountain village of Tenna in the pristine Safiental. She is a qualified beekeeper and zoologist as well as a companion for the dying. People and animals – especially bees – enrich her life very much. She is currently setting up a Zeidler project in Tenna. Honeybees have developed various defense strategies against pathogens during their millions of years of evolution. Many of them work thanks to the honey bees’ social way of life. SUMMARY:Presentation at the Sonoma County Beekeepers Association
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be about our 7-year research study of wild\, unmanaged honeybees in a Wildlands Preserve in Mendocino County that is owned by Sonoma State University. We started the project in 2021 and will conclude around 2028. We envision a multidisciplinary project that allows for multiple stakeholders to collaborate. Currently\, we are working with Texas A&M and also UC Riverside. We use beelining as a tool to track bees and locate BeeTrees. Topics will include some of the new revelations of beelining\, including tips and challenges. After an initial assessment phase (locating Beetrees)\, monitoring\, sampling\, and other activities will take the lead. So far\, we could document 100% winter survival (with a small initial data set).\nHow can we integrate the qualities and conditions that allow honeybees in the wild to thrive into our backyards and beekeeping? One approach we have taken is that we are exploring ways to incorporate the biomimicry of natural nest conditions and developed TreeNests as a novel tool for conservation. Honeybees as novel wildlife in the Americas is a rich and pioneering field of research. Environmental challenges such as climate emergency and the 6th mass extinctions are new emerging compass points for apian conservation (and that of all species) that invite us with utmost urgency into the development of truly sustainable systems.
