Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, nearly 50 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. Farms can be an important stakeholder in holistic apicultural practices and innovative conservation models involving wild honeybees during our current crisis in planetary ecology. \nThis workshop will introduce ‘Wilding’ as a system-based approach to novel apiculture and conservation practices. Through hands-on activities as well as observation and discussion\, we will explore the parameters of the natural nesting habit of honeybees\, the role of biomimicry in nest design\, and the relevance of non-human birthrights. \nThe landscape for honeybee nests will be assessed by participating in the ancient craft and science of beelining\, a technique that allows us to follow honeybees back to their home nest. Beelining is used today to locate wild honeybee nests for conservation and research. Workshop guests will also install a TreeNest (natural nest habitat) in one of the trees at Yellow Barn Farm. \nRecent entomological studies and the research by AA underscore the remarkable resilience and robust health observed in wild honeybee populations. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, nearly 40 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. One approach Apis Arborea (www.apisarborea.org) has taken is to incorporate the biomimicry of arboreal nest conditions and to promote natural population dynamics. Honeybees as novel wildlife in the Americas have become a rich and pioneering field of research that can serve our quest for a sustainable apicultural framework.
