SUMMARY:LocApiary
DESCRIPTION:The LocApiary Program is a watershed-centric ecological restoration initiative fostering self-sustaining networks of wild\, unmanaged honeybee populations within local ecosystems. It aims to conserve locally adapted genetic stock and reduce the spread of pests and pathogens associated with industrial beekeeping. Once established\, these apian networks allow local honeybee swarms to become the primary supplier for apiaries\, minimizing the impact of industrial beekeeping practices on backyard beekeepers and the wider pollinator community. In this session we will examine the overarching qualities and constitution of our local ecologies\, delving into their profound implications for the health and well-being of honeybees. Our engagement with a particular place is deeply shaped by our understanding of its unique composition\, and we will introduce LocApiary as an innovative model for healing and rebalancing of local honey bee populations and back yard beekeeping.  \nDiscussions will revolve around LocApiary principles and how to apply “wilding” to honeybee networks in various ecological settings—whether wild\, remote\, intermediate\, or unprotected. Each application will draw inspiration from wild honeybee nests\, serving as a central guidepost for design development. We will discuss how:  \n\nModels for the protection for our own watersheds and how to empower local honeybee networks\nSustainable alternatives for commercial agri-cultural pollination\nActor Networks & Apian networks\nNativism and novel ecosystems\nLand assessment and how to differentiate various landscapes\n\nThis is the forth of 6 sessions that can be booked individually. DESCRIPTION:What fascinates us about the image of a wild honey bee nest in an old oak tree?  This course welcomes participants into the community of free-living honeybees and self-willed ecological processes as a new foundation for reframing apiculture. We will explore new thinking in conservation\, approaches for climate change adaptation\, and learn about innovative practices that promote self sustaining populations of honeybees. We will explore interdependent environments\, learn about apian agencies\, and will examine novel frameworks for health and core principles of ‘wilding’. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique and exciting adventure in the wilderness of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve! This inaugural Wild Honey Bee Blitz offers a chance to explore the oak woodlands and search for bee trees during warm\, early spring days\, just before the oaks have fully leafed out. Early spring conditions are ideal for tracking wild honey bee trees by walking among the trees and watching out for trees with bees. This method is an unconventional art of tracking bee trees and serves as an alternative to beelining\, which we typically practice during the rest of the year. Be prepared for off-trail walking and the beauty of the Galbreath Wildlands. We will meet at the front gate of the Preserve. More information will be shared once we received your RSVP. \nMore information will be shared after your RSVP. \nAbout the Preserve:\nThe Galbreath Wildlands Preserve is a 3\,670-acre nature reserve located in Mendocino County\, California\, about 17 miles from the coast.. This diverse landscape features woodland\, forest\, and grassland communities\, ranging in elevation from 900 to 2\,200 feet. The preserve is home to a thriving population of wild honeybees\, with nearly 60 bee trees identified and monitored by Apis Arborea since 2021.

He has a BS degree in Biology from the University of Georgia (USA) and a PhD in Entomology from Rhodes University in South Africa. At the University of Florida\, Jamie has responsibilities in extension\, instruction\, and research. Regarding his extension work\, Jamie works with assorted clientele through diverse programming such as the UF/IFAS Bee College and the UF/IFAS Master Beekeeper Program. As an instructor\, Jamie supervises PhD and masters students. SUMMARY:Field Trip to the Wild Honeybee Populations of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:There is something truly awe-inspiring about witnessing honeybees flying in and out of their secretive wild abode nestled within a tree. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, nearly 50 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. During this excursion\, we will spend the day exploring wild bee trees\, delving into the intricacies of our project and its discoveries\, and engaging in hands-on activities such as beelining. \nWe are looking forward to welcoming you for this trip into the Wild (please know that only a limited amount of tickets is available). \n“In observing bees in their most unadulterated state\, we often find our perceptions of them undergo a profound transformation. DESCRIPTION:It is on honor to have Ollie Visick from the University of Sussex\, UK\, as our guest at the Salon. Ollie Visick is a fourth-year PhD student at the University of Sussex\, UK\, studying wild honey bee colonies under the supervision of Professor Francis Ratnieks. His main areas of research are wild colony density and nest site availability. He has reviewed the colony density literature and conducted his own surveys in southeast England. He is monitoring over 40 honey bee nest sites on 6 estates in Sussex and Kent to calculate long-term changes in colony density. He has surveyed over 1\,000 ancient\, veteran and other listed trees at an additional 10 sites to determine whether they represent important nest sites for wild colonies. New voices in conservation “recognize that effective environmental action has to be embodied action: in other words that it has to be ritualistic” (F. Apffel-Marglin). By practicing gratitude\, attentive listening\, and purposeful movement\, you will discover the ritual gestures necessary to feel your connection with the pulse of life. DESCRIPTION:Biomimicry is a critical component that allows us to tap into the deep wisdom of nature in our actions and efforts to support populations of local honeybees to thrive. In this course segment we will go step by step through the process of building natural TreeNests (aka log hives) and share lots of video footage\, necessary tools\, and other resources. We will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift in apicultural strategies in the Anthropocene. \nWe also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture\, such as the “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The wilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. SUMMARY:Honeybee Wilding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between MadAg & Apis Arborea.  We recognize agriculture’s essential role in protecting life and safeguarding biodiversity. Farms can be an important stakeholder in holistic apicultural practices and innovative conservation models involving wild honeybees during our current crisis in planetary ecology. \nThis workshop will introduce ‘Wilding’ as a system-based approach to novel apiculture and conservation practices. Through hands-on activities as well as observation and discussion\, we will explore the parameters of the natural nesting habit of honeybees\, the role of biomimicry in nest design\, and the relevance of non-human birthrights. \nThe landscape for honeybee nests will be assessed by participating in the ancient craft and science of beelining\, a technique that allows us to follow honeybees back to their home nest. Beelining is used today to locate wild honeybee nests for conservation and research. Workshop guests will also install a TreeNest (natural nest habitat) in one of the trees at Yellow Barn Farm. \nRecent entomological studies and the research by AA underscore the remarkable resilience and robust health observed in wild honeybee populations. AA attempts to leverage this research by integrating it into system-based conservation strategies that empower the resilience of local bioregions. It is a novel pathway that allows local communities to create regenerative systems in collaboration with non-human constituencies. \nA brown bag lunch and refreshments will be served. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2023\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. During this excursion\, we will spend the day exploring wild bee trees\, delving into the intricacies of our project and its discoveries\, and engaging in hands-on activities such as beelining. \nWe are looking forward to welcoming you for this trip into the Wild (please know that only a limited amount of tickets is available). \n“In observing bees in their most unadulterated state\, we often find our perceptions of them undergo a profound transformation. Our experience of witnessing wild honeybees/ Apian Beings transforms the lens through which we approach our work with them. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the body of the wild Apian Being\, their tissues\, nest environment\, life cycles\, impulses such as swarming\, birthrights and sentience.  The free expression of will and agency of the wild Apian Being is observed to identify qualities of being that become a “compass point” and inform our Regenerative Apiculture & Wilding principles. SUMMARY:Symposia Series: "Beelining: Modern-day Makeover of an Age-Old Craft"
DESCRIPTION:Bee-lining involves searching for bees and patiently following foragers back home. While centuries old\, this craft’s utility has become less effective in modern times\, with dwindling habitat and an explosion of managed apiaries abutting swaths of forests and woodlands. To increase the effectiveness of one’s hunt\, researchers have honed their bee-spying and -tracking skills and developed new techniques to reveal where bees live\, some of which will be shared with us. \nThe Symposia series is organized by Honey Bee Watch.  In partnership with the Arboreal Apiculture Salon\, this co-presentation will be a continuation of the conversation they started in December 2023 — which we recommend you listen to in advance.
