DESCRIPTION:This session invites participants into the world of free-living honeybees and self-willed ecological processes as a new foundation for reframing apiculture. We begin with a simple image: a wild honeybee nest in an old oak tree. What draws us in is not only beauty or mystery\, but a living system shaped by natural selection\, place-based adaptation\, and the integrity of nesting habitat. \nIn the context of honeybee ecologies\, wilding catalyzes a fundamental reimagining of apiculture. It advocates for the restoration of the natural physiological and morphological expressions of honeybee life\, along with the integrity of indigenous nest structure. Rooted in current entomological research on wild Apis mellifera and aligned with Rights of Nature sensibilities\, wilding offers a regenerative framework for honoring the intrinsic vitality of honeybees in relationship with landscape\, season\, and climate. \nWilding also asks us to think at the scale of watersheds and regions\, centering ecological processes\, interactions\, and conditions. It is inherently multidisciplinary\, informed by science\, arts\, humanities\, indigenous wisdom\, and a curiosity for new vantage points. \nTogether we will explore new directions in conservation\, climate-driven ecological shifts\, and practices that support self-sustaining populations of honeybees. In this work\, the wild becomes our “compass point” for navigating the journey ahead. \nTopics include\n\nWhat “wilding” means in honeybee ecologies\, and how it differs from conventional beekeeping goals\nNesting habitat as the unit of care\, including structure\, thermoregulation\, and the protective intelligence of tree-based living\nSelection pressures in lived landscapes\, tracing how disease\, forage\, drought\, heat\, and human disturbance shape survival and reproduction\nGenetic integrity and locally adapted lineages\, with implications for resilience and long-term continuity\nLandscape design for coexistence\, including core refuges\, corridors\, and practical strategies for farms and communities\nA multidimensional lens on stewardship\, weaving science with ethics\, cultural insight\, and a willingness to learn from what we do not yet understand\n\nThis live-streamed session is designed for interactive learning and lively conversation\, welcoming participants of all experience levels. SUMMARY:Through the Wild Lens: A Multidimensional Look at Honeybees
DESCRIPTION:This workshop opens a six-part sequence of live-streamed offerings. Each workshop is a standalone class and is booked individually. Through the Wild Lens: A Multidimensional Look at Honeybees introduces Apis Arborea’s evolving approach to regenerative apiculture and the wilding of honeybees as a self-willed\, free-living species. Together we explore what becomes possible when we meet honeybees not primarily as livestock\, but as novel wildlife embedded in living ecosystems and shaped by their own evolutionary intelligence. \nAcross the workshops\, we return to a central question: How might our understanding of honeybees deepen if we learn from them in their natural habitats\, on their own terms? The work is grounded in ecological ethics and Rights of Nature sensibilities\, and it draws on biomimicry\, deep ecology\, and emerging ecological science. \nThrough the Wild Lens: A Multidimensional Look at Honeybees offers a guided entry into the world of wild honeybees\, with a focus on the biological and relational foundations of nest life. Together we will explore what wild nests reveal about resilience\, adaptation\, and the “architecture of we” that arises through eusocial being. \nTopics include: \n\nLife cycles in wild nest conditions and how they shape nest development\, reproduction\, and seasonal rhythm\nMicrobiome and holobiont perspectives\, expanding the frame of bee health beyond the individual organism\nNest dynamics and the nest as “tissue”\, naming the living\, distributed coordination of thousands of bodies as one ecological presence\nWill\, agency\, and sentience\, explored through ethology\, observation\, and the ethics of how we relate to other beings\nMammalian qualities and their implications for stewardship\, nest (hive) design\, and birth rights\n\nThis live-streamed workshop is designed for interactive learning and lively conversation and welcomes participants of all experience levels. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a field day in the oak woodlands of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, where we will practice a rare and rewarding craft: tracking wild honeybee trees on foot. \nIn early spring\, before the oaks fully leaf out\, the landscape opens up. Sightlines are longer\, the light is favorable for observation\, and the flights of bees can be easier to notice. This is one of the best windows of the year to locate honeybee trees simply by walking the land\, watching carefully\, and learning to read subtle cues in the canopy and air. It is a complementary approach to beelining\, which we typically use later in the season. \nThis Blitz also serves a larger purpose. By surveying along familiar trails and through nearby stands of oaks\, we can connect previously charted areas\, refine our understanding of honeybee nest distribution\, and strengthen the Wild Honeybee Atlas work on the ground. \nExpect off-trail hiking on uneven ground and slopes\, with extended walking across variable terrain while carrying water and basic gear. Additional logistics and preparation notes will be shared after we receive your RSVP. \nAbout the Preserve\nThe Galbreath Wildlands Preserve is a 3\,670-acre nature reserve in Mendocino County\, California\, roughly 17 miles from the coast. Elevations range from about 900 to 2\,200 feet across a mosaic of oak woodland\, forest\, and grassland habitats. Since 2021\, Apis Arborea has identified and monitored nearly 80 wild honeybee nest trees within the preserve\, forming one of the most robust place-based wild honeybee study landscapes in the region. \n

Laura is Director of the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Certificate Program and a lecturer in Philosophy and Religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her scholarly interests include plant studies\, integral ecology\, psychedelic philosophy\, and environmental humanities\, especially environmental philosophy\, eco-phenomenology\, and religion and ecology. DESCRIPTION:Restoring Honeybee Populations for Resilient Ecosystems and Regenerative Agriculture.\nLocApiary\, developed by Apis Arborea\, is a watershed-based ecological restoration program that cultivates self-sustaining networks of wild\, unmanaged honeybee populations. It applies biomimicry\, locally adapted genetics\, reproductive isolation\, and evolutionary ecology to regenerate both pollinator and farm health—shifting the paradigm from extractive apiculture to self-willed\, regenerative systems. Through case studies—including Filigreen Farm’s transition from outsourced commercial pollination to a LocApiary model—participants will explore how the integration of TreeNest habitats\, beelining surveys\, adaptive management\, and “Rights of Nature” principles can enhance pollination resilience and health\, preserve genetic diversity in honeybees\, reduce dependency on commercial pollination services\, and strengthen ecological as well as agricultural systems from the watershed up. DESCRIPTION:It will be an honor to have Dr. Robert Mutisi from Zimbabwe as our guests at the Salon. Robert is a professional forester who specialises in commercial and social forestry plantation development. A passionate beekeeper and trainer who contributes to improved African beekeeping systems that addresses sustainable issues related to poverty\, hunger\, and the environment. Robert has pioneered a Nature-based Beekeeping approach in Zimbabwe where communities in marginal areas have realised their potential. The use of low-cost hives made from local material\, bee ecology and native species\, inclusivity\, non-hive centric\, scalability and sustainability have been key issues around Nature-based Beekeeping. He holds an MBA\, MALIC (Master of Arts in Leading Innovation and Change)\, and a PhD degree in Agriculture focusing on honey production and marketing and several international qualifications on development work. SUMMARY:Autumn Field Trip to the Wild Honeybee Population of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:There is something truly awe-inspiring about witnessing honeybees flying in and out of their secretive wild abode nestled within a tree. Honeybees have been intertwined with trees since ancient times and constitute an evolutionary system. However\, nowadays\, when one thinks of a “honeybee hive\,” the first image that typically comes to mind is a white box in an apiary.  \nNumerous indicators suggest that wild honeybees exhibit remarkable resilience and longevity\, surpassing the health of their counterparts in managed apiaries. The intricate interdependencies within wild ecosystems appear to foster their flourishing. To delve into this phenomenon within our own bioregion\, Apis Arborea initiated a comprehensive 7-year research endeavor at the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve\, one of Sonoma State University’s Preserve. \nSince 2021\, almost 80 wild honeybee trees have been identified and are subjected to monthly monitoring. Through this endeavor\, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing their intrinsic preferences and behaviors while delving into their life cycles and their role as integral members of a diverse pollinator community. Several research nesting sites have been established for climate monitoring\, and in 2024\, we collaborated with multiple universities for genetic sampling. The results of these efforts will be published later this year. \nIn an effort to extend this knowledge to our broader community\, we’re offering a rare chance to join us on a field trip to the Preserve. DESCRIPTION:Biomimicry is an integral approach that allows us to harness nature’s time-tested strategies to support thriving populations of local honeybees. By observing and emulating the natural processes and adaptations of wild honeybees\, we can develop more effective and sustainable conservation practices. This nature-inspired approach helps us create environments and management techniques that align with the bees’ innate behaviors and needs\, fostering resilience and ecological balance. \nIn this course segment we will go step by step through the process of building natural TreeNests (aka log hives) and share lots of video footage\, go over necessary tools\, and other resources. We will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift in apicultural strategies in the Anthropocene. \nWe also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture\, such as the 1000 year old “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The wilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. Videos are for ticket holders only. \nSpeakers:\nDave Goulson is Professor of Biology at University of Sussex\, specializing in bee ecology. He has published more than 350 scientific articles on the ecology and conservation of bumblebees and other insects. He is the author of several bestselling popular books and founded the @bumblebeeconservationtrust in 2006\, a charity that has grown to 12\,000 members. He is an “Ambassador” for @thewildlifetrusts. \nKate Bradbury is an award-winning writer specialising in wildlife gardening and an author. She’s the Wildlife Editor of BBC @gardenersworldmag and has a regular Country Diary column in the @guardian. Kate is patron for two charities: amphibian and reptile charity @froglifers and bumblebee charity the @bumblebeeconservationtrust. She is also an Ambassador for @the_rhs and Butterfly Conservation AKA @savebutterflies. \nMichael Thiele Since 2005\, Michael has been an independent apiculture consultant\, presenting his work at @harvardUniversity\, NYU\, Parson School of Design and others. He consulted for the @usdagov in the Dominican Republic and created Gaia Bees to advance biodynamic apiculture practices. In 2007\, he co-founded one of the first honeybee refuges in the USA. In 2017\, Michael established @apisarborea\, a nonprofit promoting deep ecology and ecosystem-based strategies for honeybee conservation.

SUMMARY:LocApiary
DESCRIPTION:The LocApiary Program is a watershed-centric ecological restoration initiative fostering self-sustaining networks of wild\, unmanaged honeybee populations within local ecosystems. It aims to conserve locally adapted genetic stock and reduce the spread of pests and pathogens associated with industrial beekeeping. Once established\, these apian networks allow local honeybee swarms to become the primary supplier for apiaries\, minimizing the impact of industrial beekeeping practices on backyard beekeepers and the wider pollinator community. In this session we will examine the overarching qualities and constitution of our local ecologies\, delving into their profound implications for the health and well-being of honeybees. Our engagement with a particular place is deeply shaped by our understanding of its unique composition\, and we will introduce LocApiary as an innovative model for healing and rebalancing of local honey bee populations and back yard beekeeping.  \nDiscussions will revolve around LocApiary principles and how to apply “wilding” to honeybee networks in various ecological settings—whether wild\, remote\, intermediate\, or unprotected. Each application will draw inspiration from wild honeybee nests\, serving as a central guidepost for design development. We will discuss how:  \n\nModels for the protection for our own watersheds and how to empower local honeybee networks\nSustainable alternatives for commercial agri-cultural pollination\nActor Networks & Apian networks\nNativism and novel ecosystems\nLand assessment and how to differentiate various landscapes\n\nThis is the forth of 6 sessions that can be booked individually. The live-streamed event fosters interactive learning and vibrant discourse\, welcoming participants of all experience levels. DESCRIPTION:What fascinates us about the image of a wild honey bee nest in an old oak tree?  This course welcomes participants into the community of free-living honeybees and self-willed ecological processes as a new foundation for reframing apiculture. We will explore new thinking in conservation\, approaches for climate change adaptation\, and learn about innovative practices that promote self sustaining populations of honeybees. We will explore interdependent environments\, learn about apian agencies\, and will examine novel frameworks for health and core principles of ‘wilding’. The wild becomes our “compass point” for navigating the journey ahead. Kaylin is a PhD Candidate at the University of Florida Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory. Through collaboration with Rhodes University\, Kaylin conducts field research with wild and unmanaged honey bees in the Eastern Cape\, South Africa. She used beelining techniques to locate 130 nest sites to study nesting ecology\, population structure\, and disease dynamics. SUMMARY:Wild Honeybee Blitz at the Galbreath Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique and exciting adventure in the wilderness of the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve! This inaugural Wild Honey Bee Blitz offers a chance to explore the oak woodlands and search for bee trees during warm\, early spring days\, just before the oaks have fully leafed out. Early spring conditions are ideal for tracking wild honey bee trees by walking among the trees and watching out for trees with bees. This method is an unconventional art of tracking bee trees and serves as an alternative to beelining\, which we typically practice during the rest of the year. Be prepared for off-trail walking and the beauty of the Galbreath Wildlands. We will meet at the front gate of the Preserve. More information will be shared once we received your RSVP. \nMore information will be shared after your RSVP. \nAbout the Preserve:\nThe Galbreath Wildlands Preserve is a 3\,670-acre nature reserve located in Mendocino County\, California\, about 17 miles from the coast.. This diverse landscape features woodland\, forest\, and grassland communities\, ranging in elevation from 900 to 2\,200 feet. The preserve is home to a thriving population of wild honeybees\, with nearly 60 bee trees identified and monitored by Apis Arborea since 2021.
