DESCRIPTION:It is on honor to have Ollie Visick from the University of Sussex\, UK\, as our guest at the Salon. Ollie Visick is a fourth-year PhD student at the University of Sussex\, UK\, studying wild honey bee colonies under the supervision of Professor Francis Ratnieks. His main areas of research are wild colony density and nest site availability. He has reviewed the colony density literature and conducted his own surveys in southeast England. He is monitoring over 40 honey bee nest sites on 6 estates in Sussex and Kent to calculate long-term changes in colony density. He has surveyed over 1\,000 ancient\, veteran and other listed trees at an additional 10 sites to determine whether they represent important nest sites for wild colonies. We met with her for an interview in early October and will publish the podcast asap.  Maggie (she/her) is a beekeeper\, researcher\, and parent currently based in Chiapas\, Mexico\, where she works with her extended family to manage a variety of bee-related farming projects. She holds a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Minnesota\, where she studied the strategies that honey bees and stingless bees use to keep their colonies healthy and the agricultural systems that impact bee health. Maggie’s most recent project involves surfacing conversations both within and beyond the bee research community around the ways in which research narratives normalize and perpetuate harmful agriculture systems. DESCRIPTION:Our Guest will be Grace McCormack. She is a Professor of Zoology at NUI Galway\, Ireland. Her interests lie in evolutionary biology and particularly in using molecular data to understand how organisms are related to each other and the impacts this may have on the conservation and the evolution of organismal traits. Grace has been beekeeping for seven years and currently manages 15 colonies. She researches how human ethical values and beliefs affect environmental management and conservation. She uses social scientific methods to ask and answer questions informed by scholarship in environmental ethics and moral philosophy. Her overarching interest is in understanding what it means for humans to conduct themselves responsibly toward human and nonhuman life on Earth\, and to learn how such responsible human conduct can be achieved. \nThe Arboreal Apiculture Salon is an opportunity for a global arboreal apiculture community to connect and meet for exchange and symbiotic learning\, to share innovative ideas\, and to be a resource for each other.
